by Andrew White, Published November 2024 by Glacier Bay Books. Spring Tides is a new long form graphic novel from lauded poetic-comics artist Andrew White, depicting in subtle blue ink a two-part story narrating in images, sounds, and sighs as much as it does in text, the emotional landscapes and physical turmoil of a young couple isolated after a flood submerges the earth and then slowly recedes -- but might return at any time.

A two-part story narrating in images, sounds, and sighs as much as it does in text, the emotional landscapes and physical turmoil of a young couple isolated after a flood submerges the earth and then slowly recedes — but might return at any time. As they try to understand what happened to them, and how they might recover, SPRING TIDES weaves together themes of isolation and of both personal and global collapse that recall the initial onslaught of the Covid 19 pandemic and soon after, as society attempted to reconfigure and reconstruct itself.

Words About Spring Tides

“A great book by one of the great artists of our times… He can break your heart with a line… just stunning, [Spring Tides] can be so simple yet so powerful. Andrew White is someone who should be up there with the Chris Wares and the Dash Shaws, and the Olivier Schrauwens.” – Carson Grubaugh, [best books of 2024]

“This feels like something that would have come out of Koyama Press ten years ago, or maybe Avery Hill today. Visually it resembles a more ghostly form of Connor Willumsen’s Anti-Gone, but tonally it feels right in line with GG’s Constantly or I’m Not Here. This is a book about living with pain, with illness, with an inability to be physically alright. It’s about that from the perspective of a wife whose husband is ill and from the perspective of a husband whose wife worries about his illness. Also, the world is flooding disastrously, so there’s that too. It’s good, dreamy… Maybe it’s really good. I’ll find out later, I suppose.” – Seth Hahne
